Sex positivity 101

Sex positivity is something that i think ive always loved, but had no idea the movement even existed. I love to peel back the layers of shame that get in the way of me living a big beautiful life and sex positivity is a big part of that. Sex positivity is an attitude towards human sexuality that regards all consensual sexual activities as fundamentally healthy and pleasurable, encouraging sexual pleasure and experimentation. The sex-positive movement advocates for comprehensive sex education and safe sex. If your education was anything like mine, it was shit to say the least. It lacked comprehension, diversity and curiosity.

On an individual level, sex positivity is really about mental health, Our sexuality holds so much of our sense of worthiness, self-esteem, our body image, insecurities, our ability to set boundaries, the ability to state what our needs are, etc and all of these things are tightly interconnected to our mental health. I find that our sexuality and relationships will test where we are at with our body image, our ability to set boundaries and communication skills. We may intellectually understand the need for boundaries, we may intellectually understand our body is worthy but putting that into practice can be a real test and it does take time.

In a bigger capacity, sex positivity is about how we interact and perceive with other people’s sexuality. Its accepting other people’s sexuality, their likes, dislikes, the amount of sex, etc. But even more accurately, sex positivity is knowing that we don’t even need to necessarily be accepting of other people’s sexuality, we just need to understand that it’s not our concern/business.

This is what i love about this movement, it centres boundaries, communication and open mindedness. If this is something that you’d like to explore more, check out Take up Space.
